You don't get it because he doesn't have any counter-arguement.
And seriously, how hard can it be transfer a template you already have to another player? All they have to do is to send the template key and they can create the template file from there.

So now I have 2 kinds of opponents
A: Those that think template transfer will lag the server
B: Those that want to take it a step further, and have an in-game mailing system.
A and B are the biggest enemies. Don't work your frustration out on this idea, work it out on your real opponent.

I didn't make a counter argument I made a counterpoint. In-game mailing system would kill off this little bird and another bigger more smelly bird.
And an in-game GW-Wiki would be nice to while they are at it.

But I think a mailing system would really overload the server( we don't want that ) unless A.net buys another seperate server.

Now, now, if we a going to let the camel stick his head into the tent, we can't quibble that he wants to shove his way all the way in.
I would suggest that if Anet tackles any player to player information sharing, it will probably be via an in-game mail. service
Or, perhaps, an instant messenger that floats on the screen. Since we are dealing with small text files, an in-game messaging system seems likely to be the vehicle of choice.
Or perhaps a Rune of Skill and Rune of Attributes could be concocted that "captures" the your build in rune form so it can be traded as an item with other players.
In the new Auction Houses, of course.

We already have an in-game messaging system. No need for that.
And that rune of skill and rune of attributes is just the GUI version of what I suggest.

A template is around 23 bytes or so. Adding an index it bloats to 32 bytes.
So, 40 mil x 32 bytes = 1.25 gigabytes. Let's double this figure for random overhead. 2.5 gigabytes.
That is not even taking into account, that actual template is much smaller, it's only that large due to text encoding. Real template is around 60-80% of that.
The year will soon be 2007. 2.5 gigabytes is something you can scrape of the bottom of your shoe.

Rather than this, make those Ctrl+Tab messages show in some of the current chat panels:
- Guild
- Alliance
- Party
- Whisper
So you select a name to whipser, hit ctrl-skill panel, and the message is sent to target.
(And not for commerce and local, to prevent uber-easy spamming)

Isn't the minimum filesize on your HD 4kb(NTFS, I doubt they use FAT32 and they will probably use some odd server filestoring system )? But still, templates aren't server based, so Emik's point don't matter at all.

Yes, of course, if they were provided from the server, as suggested above, this weren't an issue. Server would use a database, which has no file overhead.
This was just to point out, that even storing dozens of templates for each individual player doesn't take any significant ammount of server space. So this is not the reason why templates aren't server based.

I'm pretty sure the reason templates were client based it so we could easily trade them. But there's no trading system in-game for it.
And levortex, this update would affect all chapters offcourse.

It'll be quicker to give out templates to fellow guildmates and to those people who use the wrong skills in missions that are totally useless.

What will happend if someone miss the skill that is in template ? Well the skills that are missing shood just turn black and white and you can only see their descriptions that will be nice, something like that. Because it's pointless to transfer someone a trmplate with skills that he don't have and he can't even check what skills he is missing.
/signed about the trading templates.
Well i think it will be easy to make changes in gw applet. Something like dragging the template from Manage template window to chat window the template will change to a pure code fom txt. Sended by a whisper to user the applet will ask user "Do you wan't to accept a template" ? Yes | No When user pressing yes you only type the name of template you wanna save code in. Simple !
